Default Stoopid Question

I know it's a stupid question, but it's one of those things I just can't seem to remember...

Can network hubs be daisy-chained?

I have a Vermin Cable modem downstairs connected to a Smoothwall box (upstairs, via network cable) then the hub upstairs has connections to two PC's in my room, and a cable back downstairs to a third PC. Rather than trail another cable downstairs, I want to create another connection in the living room for the PS3. Can I add a new hub downstairs to split the single cable into two (one for the existing PC, and the other for the PS3)?

Like I say, it'a stupid question, but my brain just doesn't think computers any more. Too much beer.

Yeah that'll work as long as it has an uplink port (most these days are auto uplink anyways).

Splendid. Cheers chaps.

I'll get a hub ordered asap. I could do with a spare network socket downstairs anyway. The Vermin V+ box has an RJ45 socket on the back too, so if that becomes useable in the future it'll save hassle then.

you are better off with a switch..

hubs really should connect to one switch rather than another hub... it slows the network down. in a domestic situation you probably wont notice it but if they are big hubs it will hurt if all ports are in use.

Cheers Slam, it's all set up now.

Tbh, it's unlikely the living room PC AND PS3 will be sending/receiving at the same time anyway, so it shouldn't be an issue. It's also rare that more than two PC's in the house are connected to the t'interweb at any one time too.

The hubs are both simple one-in-and-four-out jobbies, so I don't think there's much chance of eating up the capacity anyway.
